What is cystitis? Definition

An inflammation of the urinary bladder is called cystitis. It is a chronic disease which appears as a result of an infection in the urinary bladder. The bacterial agents that cause the inflammatory process remain even after killing the pathogenic organisms.

Cystitis treatment. Drugs and diet

Nowadays, cystitis is hardly treatable. You can reduce the symptoms of the disease and turn it into a stage of the prolonged remission. The symptoms of the cystitis may not bother for years but the inflammation will begin again sooner or later.

The official statistics tells that every second woman has had the symptoms of cystitis. In the USA, more than 6 million visits with the cystitis diagnosis is registered every year. And this is the data registered officially. And how many people do not go to a doctor during the light form of the disease?

Cystitis may be light when a patient has a light or moderate pain, insignificant inflammation, and the symptoms pass within 3-4 days. The disease may be also severe, when the symptoms are kept for more than 1-2 weeks and bring serious physical sufferings.

An infection often reaches the body from within: at first, the urinary tract is affected, and then bacteria go up to the urinary bladder. Escherichia coli is often an agitator.

Women suffer from cystitis more often. It is conditioned by the physiological building. The urinary tract of women is shorter and is placed close to the anus, so that the infection may easily reach the urinary bladder.

An incomplete urination or seldom urination is often a cause of the cystitis. If a person holds it during the desire to urinate, an inflammatory process may start in the urinary bladder. Bacteria quickly develop, and the cystitis aggravates.

In fact, there are many factors influencing on the development of cystitis. Here are some of them:

  • Pregnancy;
  • Diabetes mellitus;
  • Senior age;
  • Active sexual life;
  • Non-observance of the hygiene rules;
  • Menopause, etc.

The cystitis symptoms cannot be confused with other diseases. However, the symptoms may differ depending on the type of the inflammatory infection:

  • If acute cystitis: a sharp pain during urination, pain in the lower part of the stomach, changed color of urine (dark brown), increase of the body temperature, frequent desire to urinate, blood clots in the urine.
  • If chronic cystitis: the symptoms are not felt during the remission. In rare cases, a patient may have an episodic pain during the urination, and frequent desires to urinate are observed. The symptoms are the same just like during the acute type of cystitis.

What to do in cystitis? Treatment at home

The first symptoms of cystitis appear right after the beginning of the inflammatory process. A patient should see a doctor, if these symptoms are first. If you have a chronic type of cystitis and you do not know how to treat the disease, the therapeutic procedures may be started at once.

What to do in cystitis at home?

The repeated inflammatory process usually appears within the first year after the first episode of the cystitis. Therefore, it is necessary to follow special regimen and doctor’s recommendations during cystitis:

  • Empty the urinary bladder fully;
  • Follow the hygiene and avoid casual sex;
  • Do not wear tight underwear that may affect the blood circulation in the genitals;
  • Do not delay the urination.

But the most frequent cause of the cystitis aggravation is an undercooling. Do not think that you can make cold the internal organs because of the undercooling. The organs are well protected against the temperature drops, but the undercooling makes a threat to the immunity. Bacteria actively replicate during the poor immunity, and it causes an inflammatory process. Therefore, the cystitis symptoms aggravate during undercooling in 85% of cases.

But what to do if the cystitis symptoms have already appeared?

If the cystitis symptoms appeared, it is necessary to follow the following rules before visiting a doctor:

  • Bed rest: do not do any physical activity, do not lift heavy loads;
  • Take more liquid;
  • Apply heat compress every 6-8 hours on the urinary bladder (only if fever is absent. If the body temperature is higher than 37,2 C, the heating may increase a risk of the bacteria replication);
  • Take soda-water every hour;
  • Do not take tea, coffee, alcohol, and fizzy drinks.
  • Herbal restorative drinks may be used to accelerate the emptying urinary bladder and excrete bacteria.

If all these procedures do not help, and cystitis is acute, it is recommended to start the use of the medication that reduce the inflammation and pain.

Cure for cystitis: Diet, Antibacterial therapy, Prednisolone tablets

A pharmaceutical therapy of cystitis is prescribed only during the disease aggravation and two-day-long symptoms. If a patient has a high body temperature, sharp pain and burning during urination, the antibacterial drugs are prescribed. The antibacterial therapy of cystitis is the most effective way to reduce the symptoms of the disease within a short period of time and achieve a remission.

Antibiotics of the broad action are usually prescribed to affect several types of the infection agents: Azithromycin, Ciprofloxacin, Amoxicillin, and Cephalosporin. Depending on a drug and severity of the symptoms, a medical course lasts for 3 to 10 days. In case of the chronic types of the cystitis, the treatment takes 14 days in order to fix the result and avoid the aggravation of the infection in the future.

If a doctor has a bacterial inoculation after the urine tests, and the agent of the infection is known, it is possible to use the antibiotics of the narrow action. The effect will be quickly achieved.

The antibacterial therapy is often increased by the use of the pain-relieving products, light diuretics. The main task is to reduce the inflammation and relieve the urination.

Dose of Prednisolone for cystitis. How long to take Prednisone for cystitis?

However, in case of the chronic cystitis, the inflammation may be kept even after the inhibition of the pathogenic organisms. It is peculiar for patients with diabetes mellitus who have serious problems with urination. The inflammatory process may go to the kidneys, and it will become a serious problem for a patient.

Dose of Prednisolone for cystitis

In this case, it is recommended to take Prednisolone. The hormone therapy during cystitis is seldom used but it is the only way to reduce the acute inflammatory process kept after the antibacterial therapy.

The course with Prednisolone should be short – 7-14 days during cystitis. The dosing is individual depending on the symptoms but it is on the average 20 mg per day. In 5-7 days, the symptoms of cystitis start reducing and the dose may be gradually reduced. The decrease of the dose should be gradual, by 5 mg every 5-6 days.

Cystitis diet and foods

However, any pharmacotherapy is ineffective without the diet and a strong immunity. A special menu has been developed for people with cystitis. This menu eliminates the products increasing the risk of the development of the inflammatory process.

Dieting during cystitis:

  • More vegetable and fibers should be used;
  • Consume products with urinary effect;
  • Avoid an acute and fatty food;
  • Avoid sugar and any its analogues: sweet fruit, etc.

However, the rules of the dieting are even more strict during the cystitis aggravation:

  • Take 2,5 liters of warm water per day;
  • Have herbal tea with honey that has an anti-inflammatory action.
  • Avoid dairy products. They contain a lot of calcium and fat.
  • Take food for light defecation in order to avoid constipations.

If these rules are followed, a risk of the cystitis aggravation will be lower, and it means that the therapy with the antibiotics or Prednisolone will be successful. You should know that cystitis cannot be cured, and therefore you know how to live with it.

Types of cystitis in women. Cystitis and pregnancy

As it has been mentioned, cystitis appears more in women than in men but it has less acute type. Cystitis in women often turns into chronic type and is aggravated as a result of many factors. According to the statistics, every 5-th women has cystitis in childhood, and the first symptoms appear at a teenage age.

Cystitis is often aggravated during pregnancy.

  • The immunity drops during the pregnancy. And a woman is more vulnerable to infections.
  • The hormone balance is changed, and it is a cause for many inflammatory diseases of the urinary system.
  • The uterus is increased in size and squeezes the urinary bladder. It leads to the worsening of its blood supply.

Cystitis is complicated during pregnancy, women cannot take strong antibiotics and Prednisolone, and the treatment is based on the reduction of the symptoms with moderate medications.

Moreover, doctors state 2 types of cystitis in pregnant women:

  • Bacterial: when the development of the infection happens during the reduced immunity.
  • Non-bacterial: when the worsening of the blood circulation of the urinary bladder and frequent desires to urinate cause an inflammation.

A severity of cystitis is divided into three types:

  • Catarrhal type (light): the inflammation touches only upper layers of the mucus membrane which is hyperemic and edematous.
  • Hemorrhagic acute cystitis (moderate): it appears when the inflammatory process has penetrated into the mucous membrane and has achieved the level of the blood vessels;
  • Ulcer or necrotic type (severe): the disease is related to the development of the ulcers in the walls of the urinary bladder reaching the muscles.

Women often have light or moderate type of the cystitis. The cause detects the severity causing this inflammatory disease. There are several main types of the cystitis in women that predetermine possible complications and severity of the treatment:

  • Chemical cystitis
  • Foreign body cystitis
  • Drug-induced cystitis

The female body is vulnerable to any external and internal changes, and any factors may cause the inflammatory process in the urinary bladder. Therefore, cystitis is one of the most common chronic diseases in women all over the world.
